Woman from District Dir Seeks Protection After Years of Abuse and Forced Marriage
District Dir: A woman has come forward with a heartbreaking account, stating that nearly seven years ago her brother killed a friend. According to her, as part of a peace agreement and jirga decision with the victim's family, she was married off to that family in the tradition of "Swara."
The woman says she gave birth to a son after the marriage, but for the past five to six years she has faced continuous alleged violence and abuse. She also claims her husband had relations with another woman, and he was later killed in connection with that matter.
According to the woman, her in-laws were now trying to force her to marry her brother-in-law. She repeatedly asked her parents and other family members to rescue her from this situation, but her pleas were ignored.
The woman further states that due to severe mental distress and continuous abuse, she sought help and refuge from a Qari. The Qari gave her shelter, after which she claims both of them got married.
Now the woman claims that both she and the Qari are under threat of being killed. Appealing to the government and relevant authorities, she said:
"If my marriage is a crime, then take action according to the law. But if marriage is not a crime, then provide immediate protection to me and the Qari. Do not leave us at anyone's mercy."
This case raises serious questions related to women's protection, forced marriage, traditions like Swara, and human rights. The relevant authorities are urged to ensure the safety of the woman, her child, and the Qari, conduct an impartial investigation into the matter, and take legal action if any threats or violence are proven by any party.
A woman's life is precious; providing her justice and protection is the responsibility of the state and relevant institutions.
